Buying the Parts for a Self Built Bike...
So, what do you need? I'll assume you have the basic tools if you're thinking about building a bike. If you've never indexed a rear derailleur or changed a bottom bracket, I'd advise against a self build. Whilst it's not rocket science, you do need certain a level of experience.
Here's a fairly comprehensive list to get you going. Obviously mountain bikes dont need drop bars etc, but you get the idea.
- Frame/fork
- Front derailleur
- Rear derailleur
- Cables (inners & outers)
- Shifters/Brake Levers
- Handle/Drop Bars
- Stem
- Headset
- Bottom bracket
- Chainset
- Chain
- Pedals
- Wheels
- Brakes
- Tape
- Saddle
- Saddle post
- Saddle bracket
- Bottle cages
- Tyres/Inner Tubes
- Headset Spacers
- Cassette
That's pretty much it. There will be bits and bobs you find you'll need along the way, but that should get you started.

Q. Is it okay to buy second hard parts?
A. Absolutely. As with anything second hand, just try to ensure it all works properly.

A. Nope ;)
